Virtual Reality is an active and new field of research and development in science and business. While devices for immersion in the virtual world have become increasingly common and affordable in recent years (since the release of the Oculus Rift in 2012), there is little public awareness of this technology and its potential.

Main Topic: The Senses – How does Virtual Reality change our perception?

“Alles wissen” is a popular HR television program that makes interesting topics accessible to a wide audience on a weekly basis.

In order to expand the level of knowledge and demonstrate the potential of VR technology, HR-Fernsehen shot a day in the UniTyLab of the Heilbronn University. The topic was Virtual Reality as a gaming platform and its potential to create an immersive experience in the virtual world.

On the shooting day, different demonstrations were shown. Among other things, a simulation to help treat patients with vertigo, as well as various commercial games. The green screen shots of virtual reality scenes cut together with real characters are known as „mixed reality videos“. These videos give outside persons the opportunity to see on a 2D monitor what the user experiences with the Head Mounted Display in the virtual environment.

The virtual reality footage of „Alles Wissen“ will be broadcast on HR television between 21:00 and 21:45 on Wednesday, 22 March 2017. After this broadcast, you will find the article in the Mediathek.
